Completed Prototypes

Here are a few completed (including materials inside) prototypes I'll bring to class tomorrow.
I think they look awesome! Great Success! You'll get to see them with full detail tomorrow ladies!

The last pic is of the back of the ample instruction booklet. I'm going to make a facebook page for our group.

New interation and Toolkit ideas

Here is my unfinished storyboard with illustrations

I know it's sideways but I couldn't figure out how to rotate it :(

Here are some images of the booklette cover and inside fold... instructions will be on the inside soon to follow:

I'm envisioning these instruction booklettes are held inside a a zip-lock baggy with some scrap materials, plastic knitting needle, and string placed behind them as starters. After looking at Kerrie's post, I'm really beginning to like the idea of reuseing a glass jar instead of bags though, or even old PB containers that are clear (i.e. Jiff) The information is the key, not the scraps. The table will be the most effective area to convey the message to children/parents or anyone crafty. See the storyboard for more detail

Responses to survey continued....

Jake Freeman --- musician

1.) If you were at a farmers market and these objects were free, would you create one out of
reclaimed garbage?

I don't understand the question. If I could acquire the materials free to make a cool bag, I would make one if my girlfriend was really into handmade bags, and if the materials were able to be cleaned. As for dolls, I'm not into dolls, so no.

2.) Would you create one for yourself or for a friend/family member/child? I would make a bag for someone who is really onto bags. Billy's Alana would be all about it.

3.) Would it make you feel uncomfortable if you recieved one as a gift and were told it was made
of other peoples garbage? Not at all, as long as it didn't smell.

4.) How could they be improved?
The dolls, well, they could look more like dolls, unless they are made for Helen Keller.

5.) what would entice you to create one for yourself?
Well, I like the idea of anything made from "waste" of something else. If I can make something useful out of garbage, I'm all about it.

6.) What is your opinion of there design? I think the bag is cool, I like the look, and the artwork. The dolls......are creepy.

7.) What intrigues you about each design? the bag is just kinda shabby indie hipster cool. I like it. And anyone could make them, and basically be as creative as they'd like. Everyone's would be unique. I guess really, if someone was into dolls, or had children, and was creative, they could probably make cool dolls the same way. More power to them.

1.) If you were at a farmers market and these objects were free, would you create one out of
reclaimed garbage?
1. No. I think this question is orded badly. If these objects were free, why would I recreate this with materials?

2.) Would you create one for yourself or for a friend/family member/child?
2. I would use the term recycled material rather than trash or garbage. But sure.

3.) Would it make you feel uncomfortable if you recieved one as a gift and were told it was made
of other peoples garbage?
3. I wouldn't if the person didnt market it aas someone elses trash. People are turned off to that sort of wordage. People appreciate the idea of "vintage" or "used". I was given a bag once that said it was made out of rice bag used by a village in Thailand that they used to create bags ith later. It as trash they created s something new. I am really doing the question below this.

4.) How could they be improved? See above.

5.) what would entice you to create one for yourself?
5. Nothing. I don't need a doll or a bag.

6.) What is your opinion of there design?
6. Doll 1 is weak. Bag has potential for this sort of market but if they are part of a freegan market, then people wont buy it anyways sinc eit is supporting capitalism. Doll 3 would probably sell but I dont know why. It reminds me of "ugly dolls"(an actual company) with earthy materials.

7.) What intrgues you about each design?
7. Nothing. I thought it was a mouth made out of trash. Second design: Cute, kind of hippy appeal and it has obvious use and there is a market for people with a bag that is environmentally sound. Last doll: Nothing. Why are there so many dolls?

Jane Hauptman --- Graduate of SFU -- Marine Biology Major

1.)No.

2.)Depends on what the waste materials were. Emphasis on what Andrew wrote, cleanliness as the biggest factor. If they were clean etc. I would consider making something for somebody else out of them, sure why not.

3.) I would have to know that the garbage was something not gross, cleanliness factor also important here.

4.) More detail is needed on the dolls. They are bland and do not convey any sort of amusement. I would consider making something other than a doll, because recycled garbage may not be the best "cuddle-buddy." Recycled bags are a good idea and they are already produced by many companies successfully.

5.) If the materials were cheap, sanitary, versatile, and interesting.

6.) I think the designs are juvenile and dumb. Sorry.

7.) I am not intrigued, but I am relieved that new material was not used to make them.

It seems that people re leaning towards the bag idea more so than a doll.
Wording is obviously a factor ( I worded it with an emphasis on garbage and trash purposely to see reaction), people want a clever disguise for recycled materials.

Interesting...
Proposal time I think :)

3.) Would it make you feel uncomfortable if you recieved one as a gift and were told it was made
of other peoples garbage?

RESPONSES:

Andrew Nordin - Parsons student/fashion design

1.) If you were at a farmers market and these objects were free, would you create one out of reclaimed garbage?

I would need to know a bit more about the origin of the materials, if they were actually 100% sanitary/could be sanitized to pass, without question, retail regulation.... See More

2.) Would you create one for yourself or for a friend/family member/child?

Again, see #1. Materials need to be approved for re-use. Not just Brooklyn hippie approval it was in a bag and not really touching anything else it's fine. You know, like legit- FTC approval.

3.) Would it make you feel uncomfortable if you recieved one as a gift and were told it was made of other peoples garbage?

...depending on #1, but most likely.

4.) How could they be improved?

The first one has a particularly interesting use of materials and is actually an attractive design! It slightly resembles the Uglydoll line @ FAO Schwarz.

Second one is fair. I very much like the design of the graphic which is a great jumping off point. The materials look damaged, i.e. the bottom edge of the canvas. I would revisit and edit the strap design. What is needed and what isn't?

Third one has a good base but looks unfinished. Could use more of a through-line for it's design.

5.) what would entice you to create one for yourself?

Cheap materials is obviously fabulous. I still need to be certain of its sanitation and ability to be handled and resold. Especially to children. Again, legit- FTC approval.

6.) What is your opinion of there design?

Again, see # 4. Overall, they could be polished. If you're in the business of re-using and re-selling garbage materials you want to be creating products that make the consumer say "What!?? THAT used to be garbage?? But how??? It looks perfect! Brand new!"

7.) What intrigues you about each design?

The first one is by far the stand out design. Its use of eclectic materials make it interesting to look at as well as, and I only assume from the picture, to touch and feel.

Dave DaVeiga --- FDU graduate in Graphic Design

3.) Would it make you feel uncomfortable if you recieved one as a gift and were told it was made
of other peoples garbage?

im a collector

4.) How could they be improved?

no old syringes, freshen the linens

5.) what would entice you to create one for yourself?

i only play with gi joe. if the parts were available to make a guitar pedal, or robot id do it.

6.) What is your opinion of there design?

the first one creeps me out. reminds me of a tooth. i would probably not want to snuggle that shit.

7.) What intrgues you about each design?

doll 2: someone should design doggy toys.
bag: cute if you (erin) carried it
